Every dog deserves the chance to feel safe, seen and understood. At the Australian Animal Protection Society (AAPS), many of the dogs who arrive in our care are carrying more than just a collar.
They come with anxiety, fear and trauma — often shaped by neglect, abandonment or cruel environments. For these dogs, a traditional kennel setting can feel overwhelming and intimidating, making it harder for them to relax, trust and show their true personality.
The Big Kennel is our response to this challenge. This project is about creating a calm, home‑style space where dogs can decompress, feel secure and form genuine connections with people — especially potential adopters.

48 Hour Big Kennel Match Blitz
The 48 Hour Big Kennel Match Blitz is a time‑limited giving campaign designed to create enhanced buy in from our community supporters.
For just 48 hours, every dollar donated by the community will be matched dollar‑for‑dollar by generous business partners — doubling the impact for the project and ultimately helping the animals in our care.

All donations will go toward the home-style fit out and ongoing support of our amazing BIG KENNEL
Why The Big Kennel Matters
For dogs who are anxious, shut down or fearful, environment matters.
The Big Kennel is being created inside an existing 14m x 12m shed and re‑imagined
as a home‑style adoption and enrichment space — inspired by the calm, familiar
settings seen in programs like The Dog House.
This Space Will:
- Reduce stress and anxiety in dogs
- Allow dogs to behave more naturally
- Support better behavioural observations
- Create relaxed, meaningful introductions with adopters
- Increase adoption success and
long‑term matches

Funds raised through the 48 Hour Big Kennel Match Blitz will be used specifically for the internal fit‑out of The Big Kennel, including:
- Comfortable lounge furniture (sofas and armchairs) Rugs, throws and cushions
to create warmth - Room dividers to create quiet, homelike zones.
- Enrichment toys and activities for mental
stimulation - Storage solutions for toys and enrichment items

The Australian Animal Protection Society (AAPS) is a not‑for‑profit animal welfare organisation based in Keysborough, Victoria. For over a century, AAPS has been committed to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of vulnerable dogs and cats, ensuring every animal is given the care, dignity and opportunity they deserve.
Each year, hundreds of animals come through our shelter needing medical care, behavioural support, enrichment and love before they can find their forever homes.
